Though the title sounds cynical, I am actually not. I am just exploring the path America could possibly take from here on. While it has come to the cross roads by electing the first African-American president, it will be intersting to see which path it takes down the road. I am already seeing some instances which justify the title mentioned here.
First being, more than hailing the qualities of brutally honest, elocutionary and able credentials of Obama, the media and the public are emphasising on the color of his skin. Though this is a historic, emotional and sensitive moment for many african-american people, I don't see any justification for this emphasis.
Second, america is following the path of India, where it has become fashionable to appease and work for the upliftment of minority always at the cost of majority with no conisderation of fairness. The instance I am talking about is that of Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. When he was cornered on an alleged attempt to sell the seat vacated by Barack Obama to highest bidder, he bailed himself out (temporarily ofcourse) by appointing an African-American to that seat. While I have no idea of the credentails of Roland Wallace Burris (other than what I can look up in the Internet), I am very sure he is not chosen for the seat because he is the MOST qualified person for that seat, but for his color of the skin.
While it was fashionable and a social status, four decades ago to have the maximum number of African-American slaves, is America warming itself up for a reverse racialism, where it is fashionable to shower the African-American people with all privilages and goodies with no regard to fairness and equality? America! While India has succumbed to this peril, it will be intersting to see how handle this.
